Lucky for some…

If you really want to be blown away by beautiful blooms on your big day, what better way to do it than tie the knot with the co-owner of a leading northeast florist? Claire Baxter did just this on lucky Friday thirteenth…

After a romantic proposal at the top of Ben Macdui in September 2017, Claire and her fiancé Campbell Bruce, who owns Four Seasons Florist in Rosemount with his mum, had pinned their hopes on a wedding the following summer: “Friday 13 July was the only date that the venue and our wedding party were available. It’s an easy date to remember and it was very lucky for us,” laughs Claire.

Hoping to keep the good fortune going, Claire had an idea of the dress she wanted and it only took a few shopping trips to find ‘The One’: “My mum and sister came to appointments with me and our favourite was Avorio Bridal in Fochabers – the girls were so friendly and helpful.”

She settled on a spectacular strapless A-line dress with a delicate lace top and a dreamy tulle skirt, finished off beautifully with a long train: “I loved the shape of the skirt,” says Claire. “It felt special without being huge.”

And, to complete her bridal look, two friends kindly offered Claire a beautiful veil and a glitzy diamanté hair band – the perfect ‘something borrowed’.

With the gorgeous gown setting a definite romantic fairy-tale tone for the day, the couple kept this vibe flowing throughout with blush pink and gold as their signature colours, reflected in the bridesmaids’ attire and the soft pink and white flower displays: “Campbell designed and commissioned the gold flower stands and the team at Four Seasons Florist surpassed our expectations, creating the most beautiful bouquets, ceremony displays, table arrangements and a flower wall,” says Claire. “I had a rough idea of colour and style but hadn’t seen the decorated rooms until the day. I was blown away by the scale and volume of the flowers, and our guests loved the flower wall.”

Keeping to the theme, the couple’s card box was a greenhouse adorned with twinkly fairy lights and gold lettering, whilst Claire organised the table plan: “I mapped out the table names based on key milestones in our relationship so far, then my friend Barry Snow designed them.”

The night before the big day, Claire and Campbell hosted friends at The Cults Hotel for dinner then retreated to their separate rooms in The Marcliffe.

And the following day, as Claire had a relaxing morning getting pampered with the girls, Campbell took full advantage of the opportunity to invest in quirky wedding day transport – he and the boys were picked up in a vintage fire engine and taken to the beach for breakfast!

After a game of snooker and a few drinks to steady his nerves, he greeted Claire at the altar and a humanist ceremony followed, with some special personal touches: “Our dog Spencer was there and was so chilled out – he slept for most of the ceremony,” laughs Claire. “And, instead of a hymn, we sang our own version of Caledonia called Married Life.”

The Friday 13th luck continued as the sun shone for an outdoor drinks reception before the 170 guests enjoyed a luxurious feast of salmon and lobster; fillet of beef with an oxtail tulle; and a trio of sumptuous summer deserts.

A further 30 guests joined for a night of ceilidh tunes, a DJ set and a photo booth: “The pictures got more adventurous as the night went on,” laughs Claire.

Then, just when Claire thought her luck couldn’t get any better, Campbell revealed that he’d booked a surprise trip to Paris for the week after the wedding, arriving just in time for the French football team’s World Cup parade and the glorious sunshine!
