When Treena Giles and Elliot Hornell got engaged in 2011, they knew that they wanted a September wedding. The couple had identified a number of potential venues but there was one at the forefront of their minds. Elliot had strong family connections with Raemoir, just outside Banchory. Elliot’s mum grew up living at Raemoir Cottages, his grandfather worked as a forester on the Raemoir estate, and his great grandmother also lived in a cottage on the edge of the estate.  Sadly Elliot’s mother passed away a few years ago but it still felt right, and appropriate, that the wedding ceremony should take place in Raemoir House Hotel, and, what’s more, a September date was available.

However, the couple had a mix of ancient and modern in mind for their wedding day and were keen to have ceilidh band, Laverock, play at the reception. Happily for Treena and Elliot the same September date was also free for the Rox Hotel in Aberdeen, allowing the couple to have the best of both worlds and have their reception in a chic, city-centre location well-suited to dancing the night away.

The transport required between the two venues provided the opportunity for another ancient and modern twist. Treena and Elliot organised a coach to take their guests from town to Raemoir House and then from Raemoir back into town. Treena and Elliot had planned to take a taxi from Raemoir to Rox but, unbeknownst to them, Treena’s mum, Marie, had organised a beautiful vintage car from Silver City Cars to take them there in style. Much as Treena had loved being driven by her sister Paula’s husband to Raemoir, she and Elliot were very touched by her mum’s surprise extra gift to them which made their first journey as husband and wife particularly special.

Family and friends were only too happy to play their part in Treena and Elliot’s day. Treena’s bridesmaids were her sister, Paula Mitchell, and her best friend Caroline Johnston. Caroline’s husband, Mark, drove Paula and Caroline to Raemoir House. Marie, in addition to organising the vintage car, as the sole-surviving parent, had been delighted to walk her daughter down the aisle to give her away. Treena’s niece, Cara Mitchell, who happens to be a singer/songwriter, played acoustic guitar as Treena walked down the aisle. Elliot’s best man was his brother, Buenos, and Marie also made a lovely speech before the meal – although a few tears were shed as a result!

All in all, the happy marriage of ancient and modern, vintage and new, family and friends meant a day treasured by all who were there.
