If you are mother of the bride or groom, by the time the wedding day arrives you will probably have given the happy couple lots of help in choosing from the many different options available for every aspect of the day. In all this organising, don’t forget to plan your own outfit carefully too. Even though the bride’s dress will be at the centre of attention, you will also be ‘on show’, featuring in lots of photos, and hopefully enjoying one of the happiest days of your life – all good reasons to find yourself a stunning new outfit!

It may be the most important outfit you’ve shopped for in a long time, and many ladies feel rather nervous about starting the procedure, not knowing what is ‘suitable’. There’s an easy answer to that one: the world is your oyster! Gone are the days when mothers’ outfits were frumpy, shapeless affairs; today’s Mums are more chic and youthful than ever.

Mums have lots of places to look for an outfit. You may already have a favourite ladieswear shop, or look in the evening and occasion wear sections of department stores. Some of the shops you’ll be visiting to look for your daughter’s wedding dress will have mother-of-the-bride departments too. Then, of course, there are the shops which specialise in mother-of-the-bride fashions. In these shops, you will find not only a beautiful array of possible outfits, but also some highly-trained expert assistants. Don’t worry about being hurried or hassled – you’ll be given plenty of time to look around on your own – but when you want it, you’ll be offered all the help you need.

At first, no doubt you will be drawn to styles you have felt comfortable with in the past. There is nothing wrong with this, and perhaps it will lead to a quick decision. But don’t be afraid to try something new – this is the perfect time to do it. The knowledgeable assistant will be able to suggest all sorts of styles that you hadn’t considered, which flatter your figure perfectly. Be open to her suggestions, and try everything on. Outfits can look completely different on you from how they look on the hanger. Once you have tried on several outfits, you and the assistant will have a better idea of what suits you.
